A Voice for Families: NCMEC Honors Tamia and Tim Woods

10-08-2026

For Tamia and Tim Woods, advocacy was born from unimaginable loss.

Nearly four years ago, their son, James, was targeted in a sextortion scheme online. The threats and pressure he faced became overwhelming, and James tragically took his own life.

Sextortion is a form of online exploitation in which someone threatens or blackmails a young person, often using explicit images, to demand money, more images or other content. It can escalate quickly, leaving kids feeling scared, ashamed and unsure where to turn.

After losing James, Tamia and Tim made the difficult decision to share his story. They wanted other parents to understand how quickly sextortion can happen and, just as importantly, they wanted kids to know that no matter what happens online, they can always ask for help.

Since then, the Woods have become outspoken advocates for families, sharing their experience and educating parents and kids about sextortion, its warning signs and what to do if it happens.

In September, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children honored Tamia and Tim at the 2026 Hope Gala in Washington, D.C., recognizing their advocacy and commitment to protecting children.

This year’s gala focused on the idea that one person, one idea or one decision to act can make a difference. NCMEC was proud to honor Tamia and Tim for their willingness to tell James’ story and for everything they have done in his memory.

They now run the “Do It For James” Foundation, a nonprofit that works with communities to raise awareness and provide support for parents and children. The foundation’s first annual gala will be held in Akron, Ohio on Oct. 24, 2026.

They can’t change what happened to their family, but through their advocacy, they are making sure James’ story continues to have an impact.

For Tamia and Tim, that’s what it means to “Do It For James.”
